One of the most useful sources of ranking high on the Search Engine Result Page (SERP) is using the Schema Markup vocabulary which is a type of detailed description in a short form to give a basic idea of the article or any blog post.

Schema Markup is structured data which are written in the HTML form in order to give a detailed view of an organization or any person because as you know there are many people or organizations with the same name and it gets a little tough for the search engines to find the right answer for the question people search.

Schema Markup helps the search engine by providing the type and name and other details of the organization or the person to give the accurate webpages that are related to the typed keyword.

It is one of the best SEO techniques to rank your site on the SERP; also it helps to enhance the look of the page on the internet.

There are over 10 million webpages that use the Schema Markup data to rank their websites. Although it has not been confirmed to have a huge impact on the traffics but it is useful microdata that can be used to attract viewers. It is observed to have increased in click-through rate and helped websites to gain traffic by 17% which is quite a decent percent to increase.

Schema.org was launched by Google, Bing, Yahoo!, and Yandex in 2011 with a common goal of developing a structured data markup for the webpages. It has been quite popular right after it was introduced to the world and more useful for business development.

Why is it important?

As you already know by now it is useful for ranking your site in SERP but not only this it is also important to be featured in the Google Knowledge Graph. Google Knowledge Graph helps you to find a better relevant query related to the searched keyword in short content.

If you have ever come across any snippet on the internet then you would probably know what Schema Markup is. It is a rich snippet that you find on the internet when you search for content or an organization on the internet. Many websites like IMDb, Rotten tomatoes, Pinterest, Google, etc. are using Schema not just to rank on the SERP but also to look good on the internet.

It is a very less known SEO tactic and many website owners are not using Schema for their benefit. Using Schema can boost your website’s traffic to some extent and also it looks good on the internet which can increase your site’s reputation.

Types of Schema Markup

There are many types of Schema Markup that you can use for different types of content. Schema.org uses two types of hierarchy one for the things that are described and one for the textual property values. There are four properties that come under the item type of things.

  1. Name

How to use Schema Markup?

You can use Schema Markup by encoding it in three different ways to get the benefits of rich snippets for your content. Here we will use HTML tags to represent the Schema.org Schemas because most of the search engine is familiar with HTML tags as it becomes easy for the computer to understand the language. For example, if we use the tag <h2>Avatar</h2> tells the search engine to display Avatar in h2 format on the internet but HTML tags do not give the complete information of the title “Avatar” as it could mean anything, it could be the name of the Avatar movie or it could mean a deity who comes to earth in human form according to Hinduism or the name of a particular person or organization. It becomes complicated for the search engine to find the right webpages for your keyword which is why we use Schema.org vocabularies to mark up in the HTML format to give detailed points to provide the viewers the best option that matches the keyword.

  1. By using Microdata
  2. By using RDFa
  3. By using JSON-LD

Here, we will discuss how we can use all of the three methods and how to encode them to our website,

1.     Using Microdata

We use microdata for search engines to understand the HTML tags to make it easier for the search engine to find the best-related topic easily. The Webmaster does not know what is written on the article which we search for, so how do they know what pages to display on the internet to get the best webpages out there. It is through HTML tags that we use to describe a product, a person, or an organization to the search engines.

Lets get a detailed view on how Microdata HTML tags look like,

<div>

<h1>Avenger: Endgame</h1>

<span>Director: Russo Brothers</span>

<span>Science Fiction</span>

<a href=”../movies/Avengers:Engame-theatrical-trailer.html”>Trailer</a>

</div>

Now put itemscope in the <div> tag to identify the item about the movie to get a better knowledge about the movie. It specifies that the HTML is using a particular item

<div itemscope>

<h1>Avenger: Endgame</h1>

<span>Director: Russo Brothers</span>

<span>Science Fiction</span>

<span>Ratings</span>

<a href=”../movies/Avengers:Engame-theatrical-trailer.html”>Trailer</a>

</div>

We have defined the item we are adding in the tag but it is still not specified what type of item we are using in it which is why we use itemtype in the HTML tag,

<div itemscope itemtype=”//schema.org/movie”>

<h1>Avenger: Endgame</h1>

<span>Director: Russo Brothers</span>

<span>Science Fiction</span>

<span>Ratings</span>

<a href=”../movies/Avengers:Engame-theatrical-trailer.html”>Trailer</a>

</div>

After specifying the item type of the movie, it is still not clear about the movie so in this case, we can add some information about the movie. Here we can add some properties about the movie by using the itemprob attribute inside the span tags to define the property of the movie.

<div itemscope itemtype=”//schema.org/movie”>

<h1 itemprop=”name”>Avenger: Endgame</h1>

<span>Director: <span itemprop=”director”>Russo Brothers</span></span>

<span itemprop=”genre”>Science Fiction</span>

<span itemprop=”rating”>Ratings</span>

<a href=”../movies/Avengers:Engame-theatrical-trailer.html” itemprop=”trailer”>Trailer</a>

</div>
